aeramen . 2020
two copper pipes, circular but imperfect, suspended and side by side, show the ability to transform matter in relation to man and time, understood as both cyclical and linear.
copper, from the late latin aeramen, is the first metal used by humanity and is presented here in its polished metallic state and in its oxidized state. the process that leads copper to dismutate is linear and progressive, and involves the reaction with specific external agents which, over time, react with the material, dressing it with a new shape and color. this conversion can hardly be repeated in the opposite direction. the artist's intervention contradicts the irreversibility of the process and triggers a short circuit whereby linearity is lost in an imperfect circle, since it is made by human hand. rob van den berg places himself above nature and, in fact, concretizes the potential states of matter. by choosing not to weld the two extremes, but to use a completely artisan technique to join them, it does not allow the material to close and return to itself but reaffirms its full power towards cyclicality. filippo berta, 2020 |
